When pipes need attention

Plumbing pipe problems we handle most often:

  • Pinhole leaks in copper supply lines — pitting from water chemistry, common in homes 20–40 years old
  • Frozen and burst lines — winter exposure damage, see frozen pipe repair
  • Galvanized steel supply line failures — these pipes corrode from the inside; older homes (pre-1970) often need replacement
  • PEX fitting failures — rare with modern PEX, more common with early-generation crimp fittings
  • Drain line cracks and bellies — cast iron and clay tile fail over decades
  • Sewer line root intrusion and collapse — see sewer line services

Materials we work with

  • Type L copper — for visible supply runs, durable and traditional
  • PEX-A and PEX-B — modern, freeze-tolerant, faster to install in retrofits
  • ABS — black drain pipe, standard for residential waste
  • PVC — white drain pipe, also used for some venting
  • Cast iron — repair work on older drain lines
  • CPVC — sometimes used in older homes; we work with it but recommend PEX for replacements

Repair philosophy

Two approaches depending on the situation:

Spot repair — for a single pinhole leak in otherwise-healthy pipe, we cut out the bad section and patch. Quick, minimal disruption, lasts as long as the rest of the line.

Section replacement — for older galvanized or repeatedly-failing copper, we replace the whole supply run rather than chase leaks one by one. Often this means converting to PEX, which is faster, cheaper, and more freeze-tolerant.

Full re-pipe — for homes with extensive failing plumbing (typical of pre-1970 galvanized supply or extensive lead-soldered copper), we re-pipe the whole supply system in PEX. Major job; minimal aesthetic disruption thanks to PEX’s flexibility.

Diagnostics first

Before recommending replacement, we want to understand why the pipe failed. Was it water chemistry? Galvanic corrosion at fittings? Mechanical damage? Freeze cycle? Water hammer? Knowing the cause shapes the fix — and prevents the same failure six months later.

Cost transparency

  • Single leak repair: $200–$500 typical
  • Section replacement (10–20 feet): $600–$1,500 depending on access
  • Full re-pipe of a 3-bedroom home: $8,000–$15,000 typical, including drywall patch
  • Drain line replacement: $1,000–$5,000 depending on length and access

We always quote firm before starting.
